Man dies at police station in capital

Update : 02 Mar 2014, 04:54 PM

A man has died falling off from the roof of a police station in the capital. Police officials are offering different explanations for the incident.

The dead has been claimed to be Shah Alam Sarkar, 36, an employee of two separate newspapers Aparadha Daman and Asia Barta, according to police.

Alam went to Uttara West Police Station to resolve a minor dispute between a carpenter and a college principal, Uttara zone police Deputy Commissioner Nisarul Arif said.

“He took a carpenter Nazrul Islam with him when he went to the police station on Sunday night,” he said. “At one stage Alam tried to flee from the police.”

“He tried to climb down the walls of the building from the rooftop, but he slipped and died,” the DC said without explaining further.

However, Uttara West Police Station Sub Inspector Mashiur Rahman said Alam had come for a general diary filed against him by a college principal over a published report.

The official declined to comment on how the man died.

Meanwhile, law enforcers have detained Bashir Uddin Ahmed, a principal of privately-run Trust College, located in Uttara, and carpenter Nazrul Islam.

Carpenter Nazrul told the Dhaka Tribune the college principal pounced on Alam and slapped him indiscriminately in front of the police.

“The principal owes me Tk1.46 lakh for a work I have done for him,” Nazrul said. “But he did not pay even after several years have passed by.”

“I informed the matter to journalist Alam and he published a report on it,” he said. “Police summoned me and the principal to resolve the issue. Alam came at my request.”

Top officials of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have visited the scene.
