Update : 05 Feb 2014, 04:36 AM

A policeman died and at least three of his colleagues were injured in “gunfight” with bandits in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Constable Malek, according to Munshiganj police Additional Superintendent Mohammad Zakir Hossain Majumder.

A police patrol team spotted a suspicious trawler near the Meghna bridge around 2am and closed in for a better look, the additional SP told the Dhaka Tribune.

The bandits attacked and opened gunfire on the law enforcers, he said. “The law enforcers also fired back.”

The bandits fled away, leaving three policemen injured and one missing, he added. “The body was later recovered from the waters of the Meghna river.”

“Constable Malek sustained severe injuries to his head and could not get out of water after he fell down.”

The law enforcers later recovered a pipegun and about eight local sharp weapons – machetes and long daggers – from the trawler, the SP said.

Police recovered the trawler and some looted steel plates from the area.
