Reelections in 7 constituencies underway

Update : 16 Jan 2014, 02:41 AM

Re-polling at 390 postponed centres in seven constituencies where casting of votes was suspended following violence on January 5 is underway.

The constituencies are Gaibandha 1, 3 and 4, Dinajpur 4, Bogra 7, Jessore 5 and Lakshmipur 1. The polling began around 8am and would continue till 4pm without any break.

The elections are being held at 57 polling centres in Dinajpur 4, 54 polling centres in Gaibandha 1, 80 centres in Gaibandha 3, 7 centres in Gaibandha 4, 46 centres in Bogra 7, 60 centres in Jessore 5 and 21 centres in Lakshmipur 1, our correspondents report.

However, re-polling cannot be held in two centres of the Kurigram 4 constituency on Thursday because of a High Court order, while polling in the Bogra 7 seat is being held amid general strike.

Our Lakshmipur correpondent reports that four people were held from a polling centre while trying to cast fake votes.

The Election Commission has taken special security measures and deployed a large number of law enforcers in these seats for holding the polls in a free, fair and peaceful manner.

Election Commissioner Md Shah Newaz said the commission had completed all preparations for holding the re-elections.

Voting at the polling stations was postponed because of widespread violence, including arson attacks, attacks on election officials and snatching of ballot papers, in the January 5 parliamentary elections.

EC officials said 43 army personnel have been deployed for every 10 centres, 132 police personnel for every three, 82 RAB personnel for every five and 43 BGB personnel for every 10 centres. They are to serve as a striking force to maintain law and order.

Twenty police personnel each have also been deployed at polling centres in Jessore and Lakshmipur, which the EC consider to be the most vulnerable constituencies.

The commission has also deployed 30 executive and eight judicial magistrates in these constituencies for six days, EC officials said.

The EC has already announced the result of 139 of 147 parliamentary seats and published gazette for 290, except two MPs-elect from Jessore 1 and 2.

Earlier, 153 candidates were declared uncontested winners.
