Two Jamaat-e-Islami activists died when supporters of the party engaged in a shootout with law enforcers during an overnight crackdown in Satkhira Sadr.
Police raided Agardari area, Sadar upazila to catch suspects of recent violence-related cases, Satkhira police Additional Superintendent Joydeb Chowdhury said.
“Jamaat-Shibir activists opened fire on us after attacking with crude bombs and petrol bombs,” he told Dhaka Tribune Monday. “Police were compelled to fire back.”
One Shibir man died in the shootout, the official told to the Dhaka Tribune. He refuted other media reports, as “rumours,” claiming of multiple casualties.
Satkhira Sadr police Officer-in-Charge Enamul Haque told Dhaka Tribune the dead was Shibir man Jahangir Hossain, 27, son of Ahad Ali from Shakani area.
Two Jamaat supporters, Shamsul Hoque, 50, and Shafiqul Islam, 35, were arrested from the drive, he added.
Satkhira police Superintendent Chowdhury Manjurul Kabir told Dhaka Tribune's Satkhira correspondent he was confirm of one death during the crackdown.
Satkhira Jamaat Publicity Secretary Azizur Rahman claimed of another heart attack casualty, Shahi Babu, 43, during the raid to Dhaka Tribune's Satkhira correspondent.
Meanwhile, two BNP activists were held in a drive, led by paramilitary BGB, in Debahata upazila, Debahata police OC Qurban ali told the Dhaka Tribune.
Dhaka Tribune Satkhira correspondent said arrestees Riajul Islam and Raouf Mia were attending to treatments for bullet injuries at Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
Satkhira Sadar Hospital on-duty Doctor Ilika Rani Ghosh confirmed of the injuries. Riajul's legs might need to be amputated because of the injury, she added.
A daylong hartal was called through Satkhira for Tuesday over the death of two activists, a press release signed by local Jamaat Secretary Afzal Hossain said.
Satkhira is known to be a stronghold of the Jamaat. The police superintendent of this district was closed recently for failing to tackle violence of Jamaat-Shibir.
