Parliament passes two bills for REB, EC

Update : 06 Nov 2013, 07:03 PM

Parliament yesterday enacted the Rural Electrification Board Bill-2013 and Election Commission Secretariat (amendment) Bill-2013.

State Minister for Energy Enamul Haque tabled the first bill, which replaces the Rural Electrification Board Ordinance-1977, promulgated by then President Ziaur Rahman.

In the absence of the main opposition, independent lawmaker Fazlul Azim opposed the passage of the bill without eliciting public opinion or scrutiny by a select committee.

His objections were rejected by a voice vote.

The house also passed Election Commission Secretariat (Amendment) Bill 2013, reinstating a provision allowing the constitutional body to recruit its officers and staff.

The bill was introduced on Monday by Law Minister Shafique Ahmed, and sent to the relevant parliamentary standing committee for scrutiny.
