Update : 06 Nov 2013, 07:23 PM

Home telephone and internet allowances for senior government officials have been raised from this month to facilitate more use of digital technologies in official communications and better services to people.

The increase in the ceilings of monthly telephone and internet bills range from 46% to 111%. An official order, signed by public administration ministry’s Senior Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder, was issued last week amending the residential telephone policy, 2004.

It says senior secretaries and secretaries will enjoy unlimited telephone and internet facilities at their residences. Members of the Planning Commission, inspector general of police, chiefs of autonomous bodies, divisional and district commissioners, superintendents of police will also have the same privileges.

The home phone and internet bill ceiling for additional secretaries and joint secretaries has been raised from Tk1,800 to Tk3,800 per month, a 111% increase. This category includes members of National Board of Revenue, deputy attorney general, deputy divisional commissioners and officials of the same level.

Deputy secretaries, personal secretaries of the ministers, judges, upazila nirbahi officers and officers-in-charge will get Tk2,650 for telephone and internet bills per month, up from Tk1,500 earlier.

The bill limit for senior assistant secretaries and others of the same grade has been raised to Tk1,950 from Tk1,200, while assistant secretaries will now get Tk1,425 for telephone and internet usages at home, which was fixed at Tk975.

“We hope the increases in bills will help the high officials of the government adopt more digital technologies, which will ensure transparency and faster services to the people,” Abdus Sobhan Sikder told the Dhaka Tribune.
