Coastal areas likely to be inundated

The very severe cyclonic storm “Phailin” over the west-central Bay and adjoining east-central Bay moved slightly north-westwards over the same area.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 74km of the storm centre was recorded about 200kph rising to 220kph, Met Office said, adding that the sea would remain very rough.

Gusty or squally wind may affect the North Bay, the coastal regions and the maritime ports of Bangladesh.

The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal 3.

Under its influence, the low-lying areas of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind-driven surge of 2-3 feet height above normal astronomical tide.
