Traders have converged on the city’s different cattle markets with would-be sacrificial animals over the last few days ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Customers are yet to response enthusiastically. The traders, however, are expecting to pull in the crowds from tomorrow as the government set the duration of the Eid cattle market between October 12 and 16.
While visiting different cattle markets, including Gabtoli, Agargaon and Taltola market, in the city this correspondent found a very few number of customers yesterday.
Very few of them bought cattle of their choice while most potential buyers returned home expecting the price to come down with the Eid nearing.
Kazi Mujibur Rahman went to visit the market located at Gabtoli yesterday and returned home without buying any cattle as he thought the prices of the cattle will be less this year because of huge supply.
He said he would wait till the day before the Eid.
Like Mujibur Rahman most people are waiting for the price to plummet down because of abundant supply of cattle.
Yasin Mia, a trader, who comes from Sirajganj said he had already brought 35 bulls and another 35 were on the way to reach the market.
The traders, on the other hand, are expecting a rise in the prices of cattle as the customers of Dhaka city usually starts buying sacrificial animals two or three days before the Eid. The sacrificial animals including cow and goat will be selling till October 16, the Eid day.
As per instruction of Dhaka City Corporation sale of cattle for the Eid will start from tomorrow and end on October 16, on the day of the festival.
Abdullah-Al-Mamun, one of the members of the Taltola cattle market leasing authority, was upbeat about the supply of animals but he said it could not be possible to predict the prices earlier.
As many as 20 makeshift cattle markets have been set up in the city.
