Department of Environment (DoE) fined a chemical factory Tk500,000 for violating environmental laws and polluting the environment in Gazipur.
On Saturday, DoE disclosed the information in a press note issued by Md Hafizur Rahman, assistant director (enforcement) of the organisation’s Dhaka headquarters.
Director (monitoring and enforcement) M Alamgir on Thursday fined the factory Tk500,000 for polluting the environment through the emission of the poisonous gas from sulfuric acid fumes in the air.
The department came to know about the environmental pollution through a television report broadcasted on September 28.
On the next day, a team from DoE Gazipur rushed to the spot to investigate into the matter.
Sources said they found leaves from various trees around the area destroyed because of the pollution.
Additionally, the water-hyacinth and vegetable garden in Kudaba village was also destroyed because of the emission of the poisonous gas from the factory.
Executive officer (admin and purchase) Mohammad Saiful Islam Khan said the poisonous gas was accidently emitted for 2/3 minutes while they were working in the sulfuric acid plant on September 27.
He said they fixed the problem soon after sensing it.
The Chairman of Crescent Chemicals Limited Captain (Retd) Abdus Sabur Khan and Managing Director Md Siddikur Rahman also admitted to the violation of environment laws and promised to take necessary steps regarding the matter.
