There’s plenty more life left in the “The Walking Dead” franchise — so much so that AMC is launching a spinoff series.
On track to premiere in 2015, the as yet untitled companion series is set in the same zombie-infested world as the popular show, but will focus on an all-new cast unrelated to Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) dwindling band of survivors.
Writer Robert Kirkman, who created the “Walking Dead” comic series on which the original show was based, and “TWD” producer Gale Anne Hurd are attached as executive producers, along with David Alpert.
“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of the Walking Dead universe,” Kirkman said in a statement.
“The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”
The new series — along with the recently announced “Breaking Bad” spinoff “Better Call Saul” — will help shore up an AMC slate that had been thinned by the looming ends of to several popular shows.
Fans don’t have to wait another two years for the zombie apocalypse — the fourth season of “The Walking Dead” premieres October 13 under new showrunner Scott Gimple.
