Teachers, students demand arrest of Swarna’s killer

The teachers and students of Ananda Mohan College, Mymensingh continued their agitation programme for the last three days demanding immediate arrest of the alleged killer of a female student at the college.

The students and teachers of different colleges joined the programme inclduing a sit-in and formation of a human chain in front of the college.

Leaders of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad Mymensingh unit and writer Prof Momtaz Uddin Ahmed joined the protest rally on Monday. The agitating students and teachers again expressed their grief as police were yet to arrest the killer.

On September 1, Abdus Samad Raju, a fourth year student of the college, allegedly hit Afsari Akhtar Swarna,  17, a first year student of the institution, with a brick, leaving her critically injured at the botanical garden of Bangladesh Agricultural University.

Swarna was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where she died on September 6.

Meanwhile, the college authorities has taken steps to cancel the studentship of Raju, demanded by the agitating students and teachers.

The college authority has sent its recommendation today to the vice-chancellor of National University to cancel Raju’s studentship and take necessary action as per law of the university, said Prof MA Mannan, principal of the college.

Chairman of Bangla department at the college Prof Ratan Siddique said they gave a seven-day ultimatum to the administration today to arrest Raju.

Chairman of Human Rights Commission Dr Mizanur Rahman also expressed his sympathy with the ongoing movement over telephone, informed Prof Ratan.

Golam Sarwar, officer in-charge of Kotwali police station said soon after the incident, Raju and his family members left the house keeping it under lock and key.
