The streets and roads of the capital went under water on Sunday, as continuous heavy rain from Saturday afternoon resulted in water logging and huge traffic congestion, causing immense suffering to city dwellers.
Abdur Rahman, meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department told the Dhaka Tribune: “It has recorded 156mm rain from Saturday 6am to Sunday afternoon. It will also continue Monday, but not heavy like the last two days.”
Commuters, school going children, servicemen and traders could not move freely on the roads and footpaths of the capital as heavy rain caused severe water logging in different areas. Moreover, they also faced heavy traffic congestion because of the water logging and heavy pressure of Eid shoppers in the markets.
Azizul Islam, serviceman of a private company, said: “I could not reach Motijheel from Mirpur in two hours due to heavy traffic congestion caused by water logging in different parts of the city.”
Meanwhile, roads in some areas of Fakirapool, Farmgate, Shukrabad and Balabagan were under 2-3ft of water, with water entering many shops in the capital.
Afjal Hossain, a resident of the Shantibagh area, said most of the people in the area had not been able to leave their homes since the morning, adding: “The city corporation has been re-papering some roads in the area, which also creates difficulties in rain.”
