The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) vice-president Helal Uddin has resigned from the post of convener of its market monitoring committee and member of the commerce ministry market monitoring committee protesting rampant extortion by police.
“I resigned as I failed to keep prices at tolerable level for general people due to rampant extortion on the highways by police,” Helal said in his resignation letter.
“Being a business man, I tried to keep prices of essentials stable but it yields no result for the commoners,” he added.
The business leader alleged that rampant extortion on the highways from goods laden vehicles by police, influential people and toll collectors are responsible for failure of keeping prices at reasonable level during the month of Ramadan. Helal quoted several news reports highlighting police extortion.
He, however, said: “I could not protect farmers’ interest and failed to protect the dignity of the businessmen, which prompted me to quit from the post.”
