Awami League lawmaker Golam Sabur Tulu was killed in a road accident in Faridpur on Friday.

Four other people were also injured in the incident, our correspondent from Faridpur confirmed.

In separate messages, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina mourned the death of the MP and sympathised his bereaved family.

The Barguna parliament member was reportedly in a rush to reach Dhaka before iftar and hence, despite being aware of risks, he urged the driver to run the jeep faster, also ignoring the drizzles that made the highway slippery.

All these catalysts triggered the fatal accident that claimed the life of Tulu as the driver lost control over the vehicle in Chumurdi area under Bhanga in Faridpur around 3:45pm on Friday.

The critically injured driver, Sagir Hossain, 35, told police that Tulu, sitting on the front seat, asked him to speed up the sports-utility vehicle so that they could reach Dhaka before iftar.

“It was drizzling and the highway was slippery. I lost control over the jvehicle while giving way to a covered-van. The jeep crashed into a tree and then fell into the roadside ditch.”

Three other companions on board – brother of the MP and school teacher Golam Shahid Nilu, 65, Patharghata Girls School Headmaster Harun-or-Rashid, 55, and his personal secretary Shahidul Islam, 32 – were also injured, reports our correspondent in Faridpur.

After the accident, locals rushed to the spot and took the injured to different hospitals of the district.

Around 5:30pm, Faridpur Superintendent of police Zamil Hasan and Additional Superintendent of Police Bijoy Kumar Basak, and Officer-in-Charge of Bhanga police station Dadan Ahmed Shikder confirmed the death of the lawmaker, according to our Barisal correspondent.

Tulu went to his election constituency on Sunday. Barguna Awami League sources said the lawmaker left Betagi for Dhaka on Friday noon on his personal SUV.

They were using Barisal-Faridpur-Dhaka highway and were about four kilometres away from Bhanga Bridge when the accident took place. Local people rescued them and took to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.

Born on July 18, 1953 at Kupdan village under Kalmegha union of Patharghata, Tulu was residing at New Eskaton, Dhaka. The lawmaker left his wife and three daughters, and admires to mourn his death.
