The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is planning to serve notices to house and commercial building owners who evade taxes or do not have any Tax Identification Numbers (TIN) from July 1.
“We have already identified more than 50,000 house and commercial building owners who do not have any TIN number,” said the revenue body Chairman Ghulam Hossain.
“We will serve notices from July 1 asking them to pay their taxes,” he said, adding that the notices are likely to be served under article 93 of Income Tax Ordinance, 1984.
In order to widen the tax net, he said, NBR was carrying out surveys among house and commercial building owners.
Among the 50,000 houses, 30,000 are residential building owners and the remaining 20,000 are commercial building owners. The number is expected to exceed 100,000, he said.
According to the procedure, the notices will ask owners to pay taxes within the stipulated time. He also warned that if they fail to pay, their bank accounts will be frozen and the taxes will be adjusted from there.
“We are expecting to have revenue worth Tk10bn from this sector,” he concluded.
Earlier on June 20, the revenue body chairman in a post-budget discussion referred to a survey where it was seen that about half of the house owners in the capital do not have tax files.
Around 26,000 out of 60,000 house owners do not have income tax files.
For the fiscal year 2013-14, the total revenue earnings were set at Tk1.67tn. Out of that, the NBR will generate Tk1.36tn which is 11.4% of the GDP.
To achieve the revenue target, the revenue body is initiating different steps including conducting door to door surveys on house owners to detect people who have evaded taxes.
Currently, the revenue body does not have any list of house owners having tax related information.
