More than 600 families in the GT Road area of Chandpur district town have been suffering immensely for want of electricity for 12 days.
The situation arose when an electric transformer in the area went out on June 2, reports UNB.
The power crisis, coupled with the scorching summer heat, has doubled the woes of the residents in the area, especially businessmen, women and children.
Household chores are hampered mainly because water cannot be lifted through power pumps because there is no electricity.
Children were among the worst sufferers because they could not study in the dark, locals said.
Local businessmen said they had been affected by the continuous power outage.
They also said, the Power Development Board (PDB) transformer in GT Road area went out of order suddenly with a big bang on June 2.
On getting information, a team of PDB came to repair the transformer but to no avail. The transformer has been left there since, locals said.
Another PDB team visited the spot the next but that team too failed to repair the transformer.
Members of the second PDB team said the transformer was damaged beyond repair and that at present they did not have any transformer in stock.
Sources said the PDB authorities had been trying to bring a new transformer from Comilla city, which might take a few more days’ time.
