Two crude bombs were blasted by unidentified persons at the city’s Shahbagh intersection Sunday noon shortly after the Ganajagaran Mancha activists ended a procession that was protesting against the Jamaat-sponsored countrywide shutdown.
Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police said two persons riding on a motorcycle hurled the bombs beside a road-divider in front of the National Museum around 12:45pm.
Witnesses said the cocktail bombs were exploded close to the spot where the dais of Ganajagaran Mancha, a platform launched by the bloggers and online activists, was set up in February demanding capital punishment to the war criminals.
After exploding the bombs, the duo left the scene within seconds making their way toward Katabon, said a flower vendor.
Minutes before the explosion, several hundred activists and supporters of Ganajagaran Mancha gathered in front of the Museum after finishing a procession protesting against the hartal.
The procession marched through several streets surrounding the Shahbagh intersection.
Shahbagh police chief Sirajul said nobody was hurt in the explosion. Security was beefed up around Shahbagh intersection following the explosion, he added.
Protesting the crude bomb blast, the activists and supporters of Ganajagaran Mancha brought out a torch procession from Shahbagh at 7:30pm.
