Update : 10 Jun 2013, 05:19 AM

The government will import 25,000 tonnes of urea from Qatar’s state-owned company Muntajat to meet fertiliser demands for the next Aush season.

Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) will place a proposal for the procurement to the cabinet committee on public purchase at a meeting scheduled to be held on Monay, official sources said on Sunday.

BCIC, the state-owned company, controls the production and supply of urea in the country. The total demand of urea is estimated at 2.4m tonnes for the FY 2013-14. Currently the BCIC storage has 500,000 tonnes and a storage of 2.9m tonnes is targeted by the end of the fiscal year. The urea will cost around $355 (Tk27,594) per tonne according to a contract with Muntajat. A total import of 500,000 tonnes of urea is to be made from the company during the next fiscal year.
