Inflation slips in July

The month-to-month inflation stood at 5.4% in July, which was 5.53% in June, according to Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data released yesterday. “Inflation rate has been witnessing a lowering trend over the last couple of months due to continued drop in imported products,” said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal after the Ecnec meeting held at the NEC conference room in the city.imitless-bradleyBut, food inflation increased a bit due to spending on Eid-ul-Fitr as the government’s procuring foods from the farmers in higher prices for ensuring fair prices, he said. Food inflation moved up to 4.35% in July from June’s 4.23% and non-food inflation decreased to 6.98% from 7.5% during the period. In rural areas, inflation rate in July was 4.54%, which was 4.63% in June and in urban areas, it was down 7% from 7.23%. In rural areas, food inflation spiked 3.59% from 3.44% and in urban areas, it climbed to 6.11% from 6.06% during the period. In case of non-food inflation, it declined to 6.26% from 6.79% in rural areas while it was down 7.98% from 8.48% in urban areas. The general Point-to-point inflation rate came down to 5.40 percentage point in July, which is lower for more than 10 years, mainly due to the lowering trend for the last couple of months and slight decrease in non-food inflation.
