Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has expressed optimism about controlling inflation, projecting that it will fall below 8% by June.

“In February, inflation dropped to 9.32%, the lowest in 22 months, and we expect it to fall further in the coming months,” the chief adviser said on Tuesday in a speech to the nation on the occasion of Independence Day and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Expressing gratitude to expatriates, Yunus said: "Our expatriate brothers and sisters have brought relief to the country's devastated economy. Since the interim government took over, remittance has consistently increased. In February, remittance flow set a record, growing by nearly 25%, reaching $2.5 billion."

Highlighting the looting of the previous government, he said: "In the past 15 years, $234 billion have been siphoned off - this is something we know. There were many ways it was siphoned off, and these methods were quite innovative.

“One embezzlement method left everyone stunned: money was siphoned off under the guise of sending funds to children studying abroad. In one case, $33.3 million—nearly Tk400 crore—was sent to a child’s official bank account for just one semester's (3 months) expenses. Efforts have already been made to intensify international actions to bring these money launderers under the law swiftly."

Referring to the government's efforts to improve the economic situation, the chief adviser said: "The interim government is holding regular meetings with top investors from various countries. They are very interested in investing in Bangladesh's current system. I hope you will soon see new foreign investments in the country."
