Three people, including a madrasa teacher, were killed and 25 others injured in a fierce clash between activists of Awami League and Jamaat-e-Islami at Umarpur village in Shibganj upazila on Sunday reported UNB.
The deceased were identified as Bashir Ahmed, a teacher of Bhabanipur Madrasa and resident of Lebudanga village in Gomastapur upazila, Nurshed Ali of Umarpur village and Nasir Uddin of Sartnagar village in Shibganj upazila.
Bashir was known as a Jamaat supporter while the two others were the ruling party men.
Police said an altercation ensued between the Awami League and Jamaat men around 2:30 pm over a trifling matter.
Following the altercation, both the groups, equipped with sticks and sharp weapons, attacked each other, triggering a clash.
A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee that left 28 people injured from the both sides.
About 12 crude bombs were also exploded and several houses torched during the clash.
Being informed, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
The injured were rushed to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex where Bashir, Nasir and Nurshed died later.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shibganj Police Station, confirmed the incident, saying additional police have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.
Meanwhile, the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir attacked a police team at Shibtala in the district town around 5pm, leaving sub-inspector of Sadar Police Station Rais Uddin injured.
The unruly Shibir men also set fire to two trucks in the area. On information, firefighters rushed in and doused the blaze.
Police arrested two Shibir men, including its town unit president Enayetullah, from the spot.
