About 25 million cubic feet (mcft) of gas has been added to the national grid as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Srikail gas field and transmission pipeline Saturday morning, reports BSS.
Opening up the Srikail gas field and transmission pipeline, the prime minister said the government has made a decision to use the people’s resources for their need first and then consider exporting.
Every leader should have a responsibility toward the country and keeping this point in view, Sheikh Hasina has taken the decision of not exporting gas before the national election in 2001.
The prime minister said her government has already taken initiatives for digging a third gas well in Srikail gas field to reduce gas shortage in the country.
Home minister Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, food minister Dr Abdur Razzak, adviser to the prime minister Dr Tawfique-e-Elahi Chowdhury, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Enamul Haque, Pertobangla chairman Dr Hossain Monsur and the Russian ambassador in Dhaka were present on the occasion.
Energy secretary Mahbubur Rahman Khan briefed the prime minister on different aspects of the gas field.
He said Russian state-run gas and oil exploration company Gazprom has discovered the gas field in cooperation with Petrobangla at a cost of Tk511.8 million.
The gas field went into commercial production with 15 mcft gas on March 22 last.
Earlier, the past BNP government took the initiatives to dig the first gas well in Srikail, but no gas was found.
After assuming office this time, the present Awami League government has taken steps to dig the second gas well in Srikail and found gas from this well.
Gazprom started digging the third well in Srikail gas field from last March 8 in cooperation with Petrobangla.
