Update : 19 Apr 2013, 02:16 PM

Seven people, including five cops, sustained bullet wounds in a gunfight between police and members of ‘Jihadi Bahini’ in Sadar upazila on Friday afternoon.

Police and locals said a clash broke out between members of ‘Jahadi Bahini’, led by Bashikpur UP chairman and local Awami League leader Abul Kashem Jihadi, and ‘Laden Masum Bahini’ at Balaishpur around 2pm over establishing supremacy in the locality.

Several gunshots were traded during the melee between the two groups. When police rushed in on information, the both groups retreated.

However, the gangsters of ‘Jihadi Bahini’ opened fire on the law enforcers when they were approaching Modanpur around 3pm, forcing them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

Seven people, including constables Saiful Islam, Mohammad Hanif, Ismail Hossain, Sharif Hossain and Mizanur Rahman, and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drive Abdul Barek, sustained bullet wounds during the gun battle.

Police recovered 20 bullets from the spot.

Confirming the incident, in-charge of Duttapara police camp M Nur Nabi said they launched a manhunt to nab the culprits.
