Pro-hartal activists in Chandpur started a blockade on the Chanpur-Comilla regional highway early today on the first day of the 36-hour hartal enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.
Pickets torched tires and fell tree logs on the road.
In the Kumardugi area of the highway, strikers vandalised a number of motorbikes and fell trees on the road.
Police rounded up four Jamaat men and six BNP activists from different places in the district.
Elsewhere in the Chandpur district town, BNP’s volunteer wing Shechchasebak Dal and student front Chhaatra Dal brought out separate processions supporting the hartal.
