The 97th birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was celebrated across the country yesterday with due respect.
On March 17 in 1920, the architect of the nation was born in Tungipara upazila of Gopalganj district.
Through his dynamic leadership, he had organised the Bengali nation to fight against exploitation and repression by the Pakistani rulers that culminated in independent Bangladesh through nine months of war in 1971.
On August 15, 1975, the great leader of the land was assassinated along with most members of his family by a cabal of army men.
The day was celebrated as the National Children’s Day and a public holiday.
In Chittagong
District administration, different political parties, educational institutions and socio-cultural organizations celebrated the day through elaborate programmes, reports our correspondent.
The programmes included children rally, placing of wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu, cultural function, discussion, essay competition, drawing competition and poetry recitation.
Local units of AL and its front organisations also celebrated the day through a daylong programme. The programme included hoisting of national and party flags, garlanding portraits of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four other national leaders and holding discussions.
Chittagong city unit of Awami League organized a children and adolescent rally in front of central Shaheed Minar this morning. A large number of children from different parts of the city wearing colourful dress gathered in front of Shaheed Minar and took part in the rally.
In Sylhet
Our correspondent said district and upazila administrations, Awami League (AL), its front organisations, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Shilpokola Academy, SUST, Metropoliton, Leading University, educational institutions and other organisations chalked out elaborate programmes.
The programmes included placing of floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, children’s gatherings and rallies, processions of unprivileged children, drawing, handwriting, essay and ready speech competitions, discussions and cultural functions.
The local news papers published special supplementary issues marking the day, special munajats was offered at the religious institutions.
In Faridpur
According to the reports of our correspondent, in the morning, district administration, political parties, Awami League and its front organizations and various socio-cultural organizations placed floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu kept at local Ambica Maidan.
A three-day programme was taken by the local district administration through arranging mobile cinema show titled ‘Chiranjib’(Immortal) Bangabandhu at various points of the town and also in upazillas.
Recitations of poems on Bangabandhu, art and patriotic song, essay competitions were held among the children at DC office premises organized by Shishu Academy.
A milad mahfil was held at Shah Farid Dargah mosque and special prayers was offered at mosques, temples, Ramkrishna Mission and churches.
A voluntary blood donation camp has been organized at Ambica Memorial Hall.
In the evening a discussion meeting on the life and works of Bangabandhu was held at local Kabi Jasimuddin Hall in
the district.
In Khulna
Marking the day, the district administration, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Khulna City Corporation (KCC), Khulna Zila Parishad, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Khulna University (KU), Islamic Foundation, Khulna Press Club (KPC), Khulna Union of Journalists(KUJ), Khulna city and district unit Awami League (AL) and its front organizations, different academic institutions and socio-cultural organisations chalked out elaborate programmes, said our correspondent.
The day was also celebrated in all other districts across the country including Shariatpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Thakurgaon, Meherpur, Chuadanga, Narsingdi, Naraynganj, Magura, Bagerhat, Munshiganj, Feni and Noakhali.
