A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday served a legal notice urging to halt biometric registration for SIM cards, claiming that it violates the privacy of users.
Md Humayan Kabir Pallab, who served the notice on behalf of a resident of Segun Bagicha in the capital, said in the notice that the biometric data for SIM cards was likely to be used for criminal activities if it fell into the wrong hands.
The move will create a high risk if national and international criminal organisations, networks or syndicates get access to the database, read the notice.
The lawyer said collecting such information would be seriously prejudicial to his client as well as the whole society.
In the notice, posts and telecommunications secretary, law secretary, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, inspector general of police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, Grameenphone, Robi Axiata Ltd, Airtel Bangladesh Ltd, Banglalink, Teletalk Bangladesh Ltd and Citycell were made respondents.
The petitioner will move to the High Court seeking legal protection if the government and mobile phone operators do not stop collecting biometric data and taking fingerprint within two days.
