The High Court has fixed February 11 to deliver a verdict on an appeal in a murder case filed in connection with the 2004 grenade attack on former British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury in 2004.
The HC bench of Justice M Anayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain fixed the date for pronouncing the verdict on Wednesday after completing the hearing on the death reference of the case.
The court also held the hearing on appeal petition filed by the convicts.
On May 21, 2004, three people were killed and over 70 others sustained injuries in the grenade explosion which took place after the Juma prayers at Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet.
The Bangladesh-born UK envoy also suffered leg injuries in the attack.
Two separate cases were filed with Kotwali police station in this connection. The cases were later transferred to the divisional speedy trial tribunal for quick disposal.
On December 23, 2008, Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal awarded death penalty to Harkatul Jihad (Huji) chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, operatives of the outlawed militant outfit, Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul, and Md Delwar Hossain alias Ripon in a murder case filed in connection with the grenade attack.
Mufti Hannan's brother Muhibullah alias Muhibur Rahman alias Ovi and Mufti Main Uddin alias Abu Zandal were awarded lifetime imprisonment.
