The Dhaka city authorities are going to install LED lights in all street lamps to ensure security for the citizens as well as to provide enough lighting on the streets for the law enforcers to perform their duties properly, said Sayeed Khokon.
Speaking at an event for the “Clean Dhaka 20Sixteen” campaign of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) yesterday, the DSCC mayor also said all street lights in Shahid Minar area will be converted to LED lights before February 21.
LED lights will replace the existing street lights in the area where Ekushey Boi Mela before the fair starts off tomorrow, he added.
“All street lights in the city will be LED lights this year,” Khokon said.
The event took place at Rajarbagh Police Line in the city yesterday morning.
According to a survey by the government’s Power Cell conducted in 2014, there are a total of 71,276 street lights in the capital.
The lights currently used in the streets are of three kinds – sodium, fluorescent and energy-saving lights (ESL).
Addressing the event, Khokon said DSCC alone cannot ensure the cleanliness of the city and needs the citizens’ assistance.
He said if any street or road needs repair work, then the locals can inform the respective city corporation who will take care of it.
Khokon also said the city corporation would work to resolve issues such as footpath grabbing by small traders, illegal land grabbing and traffic congestion in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah, who also spoke at the event, stressed the necessity for the Dhaka-dwellers to have civic sense.
Declaring that the DMP would continue supporting the Dhaka city corporations, the DMP chief said an ugly-looking Dhaka lets each of its citizen’s head down when foreign guests visit the city.
He also criticised the councillors’ development work in their jurisdiction without proper planning, which is causing public sufferings. He urged the councillors to work responsibly.
About security at Ekushey book fair, Asaduzzaman said security measures have been taken in light of previous incidents at the book fair. He said tight security and enough lighting will be ensured at the book fair venue.
