The Bangladesh Police authorities are planning to form metropolitan police forces in Comilla and Narayanganj cities and a police range in Mymensingh city.
The Organisation and Management Department of Bangladesh Police sent a proposal in this regard to the Ministry of Home Affairs, sources told the Dhaka Tribune.
Earlier, the cabinet approved another proposal to form metropolitan police in Rangpur and Gazipur, which now awaits to be placed in parliament.
This decision has come in light of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's promise of better police services in the country, said Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdul Alim Mahmud of the Organisation and Management Department.
A proposal to form Narayanganj Metropolitan Police and Mymensingh Range Police has already been sent to the ministry, and another proposal to form Comilla Metropolitan Police will be sent soon, he added.
Police high-ups said the initiative to metropolitan policing in new cities is being taken to ensure better police services.
If the proposal gets approval, 50,000 new police members will be recruited and assigned to the new metropolitan police forces so that the citizens in these cities get modern police services, they said.
According to sources, the proposal suggests to assign a force of 1,248 members including a DIG, two additional DIGs and six superintendents to both Narayanganj and Comilla.
It also suggests appointing 54 police officials including a DIG in the Mymensingh Range.
Rangpur and Gazipur are getting 1,185 and 1,152-member forces, respectively, each to be headed by a DIG, sources said.
The country currently has six metropolitan polices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal.
