The World Press Photo 2015 exhibition was launched on Monday at the Drik Gallery in the capital. This travelling exhibition, unique in its kind, is the result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography.
Drik Gallery, in association with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, has organised a prestigious exhibition of the winning images of World Press Photo 2015.
The exhibition was inaugurated by HE Leoni Margaretha Cuelenaere, the Ambassador of the Netherlands Embassy in Dhaka. Nasir Ali Mamun, prominent photographer, and Anaïs Conijn, the project manager at Exhibitions from World Press Photo graced the inauguration as well. Shahidul Alam, the managing director of Drik, delivered the welcome note at the opening ceremony.
The World Press Photo competition is the world’s leading contest for professional press photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers. This year’s competition drew entries from 5,692 photographers from 131 countries. A total of 97,912 images were entered in the contest. The international jury selected 45 entries to confer with awards in eight categories- contemporary issues, daily life, general news, sports, nature, portraits, spot news and long-term projects.
This year World Press Photo 2015 had Munem Wasif as one of the jury from Bangladesh. Sarkar Protick’s winning images was titled “silent and subdued; life of an ageing couple.”
With around 100 local exhibitions produced every year, the World Press Photo exhibition tour of prize-winning photographs is the most popular travelling photo event in the world.
The exhibition will be open for all till January 8, 2016 everyday from 3 to 8pm.
