Merkel Time's Person of the Year, Baghdadi runner-up

Update : 09 Dec 2015, 01:43 PM

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has been named by Time magazine as its Person of the Year.

The magazine made the announcement on Wednesday, noting her resilience and leadership when faced with the Syrian refugee crisis and turmoil in the European Union over its currency this year.

The cover of the magazine shows an oil painting of her, looking somewhat stern, with the caption: Chancellor of the world.

"You can agree with her or not, but she is not taking the easy road. Leaders are tested only when people don’t want to follow."

She becomes 4th woman since 1927 to be named Person of the Year.

Time's Editor Nancy Gibbs explains why the German Chancellor is the final choice: "She's the de facto leader of a continent, steward of the world’s fourth biggest economy, a principled manager and a resolute diplomat."

The Islamic State leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was named as their second choice, given his "opportunism".

Donald Trump, who was third, was not pleased with the announcement.

More specifically, he was not pleased that he missed out on being named the Person of the Year and took to Twitter later on Wednesday to offer up a “I told you so.”

He said in a tweet: "I told you @TIME Magazine would never pick me as person of the year despite being the big favorite They picked person who is ruining Germany."

Trump had predicted that there was "no way" the magazine's editors would pick him as their Person of the Year, suggesting they couldn't bring themselves to name him the winner.

The Black Lives Matter activists was fourth, and Hassan Rouhani, president of Iran, fifth while Travis Kalanick, CEO of Uber, sixth, and seventh place went to Caitlyn Jenner.

Doctors, nurses and others fighting Ebola were named Person of the Year in 2014, while Pope Francis snagged the title the year before.
