The government has decided to detach government colleges from National University and bring them under the affiliation of public universities.
However, the private colleges will remain affiliated with National University, an official of University Grants Commission (UGC) told the Dhaka Tribune Monday.
Before, all the colleges in the country that offer tertiary education used to be affiliated with public universities – namely Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University and Khulna University.
However, after National University was established in 1992, the colleges – both government and private – were brought under its umbrella.
The UGC official, who requested to remain anonymous, said the re-affiliation of government colleges to government universities is a part of Pre-Appraisal Mission of the Proposed College Education Development Project, sponsored by the World Bank and implemented by the UGC.
The decision has been made to improve the management and maintain the quality of education provided in these colleges, he added.
A six-member delegation from the World Bank met with UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan yesterday in this regard.
In the meeting, the delegation followed up on the progress of the project and discussed establishing quality assurance mechanism in colleges, Bangladesh Development Research and Education Network (BDREN) connectivity to colleges and the role of the UGC in implementing the government plan, said a UGC press release.
Giving updates to the delegation, the UGC chairman said a committee has been formed to implement the government plan for affiliating government colleges with public universities, and it is working on its final report in this regard.
