SC upholds HC order for increasing FFs’ retirement age

Update : 16 Nov 2015, 09:54 AM

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld a High Court verdict that ordered to place a proposal to the cabinet of increasing retirement age of freedom fighters from 57 to 65 in government job.

A four-member bench, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order on Monday, dismissing a leave-to-appeal filed by the state.

Following the verdict, there is no legal barrier to place the proposal to the cabinet.

On January 14 in 2015, the High Court passed the order to extend the retirement age of freedom fighters to 65 from 57.

In 2006, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposed to increase the retirement age of freedom fighters in government job from 57 to 65.

The PM also directed the concerned authorities to place the proposal to the cabinet. Later, the direction was not implemented.

In 2013, a freedom fighter filed a writ petition with the High Court regarding the PM’s proposal.

Following the writ, the HC ordered to extend the retirement age of freedom fighters to 65 from 57.

Later, the government filed appeal petition with the Appellate Division of the apex court, challenging the HC verdict.

On April 16, Chamber Judge stayed the HC verdict for eight weeks and asked to file a leave-to-appeal.
