Update : 04 Nov 2015, 07:29 PM

The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh has urged the British government to increase the number of scholarships and fellowships for Bangladeshi students in UK universities.

UGC Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan made the appeal when British Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka Mark Clayton called on him at his office yesterday.

Suraya Jahan, deputy director of Trade and Investment at British High Commission in Dhaka, accompanied the deputy high commissioner. At the meeting, the UGC chairman said the regulatory body of universities in the country was also keen to establish stronger ties with UK universities to internationalise higher education here.

They discussed various aspects of higher education including collaborative research, networking, quality enhancement, exchange of students and faculties and also cross-border higher education, sources said.

The UGC chairman further said expansion of education has taken place in the country to a large extent over the years, and now it was necessary to infuse quality in education – from primary to tertiary-level – to keep pace with today’s world.

The meeting was also attended by UGC members Prof Dr Mohammad Mohabbat Khan, Prof Dr Abul Hashem, Prof Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, Prof Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah and Prof Dr Dil Afroza Begum and UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled, among others.
