Myanmar law enforcers pick up 6 Bangladeshi fishermen

Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) have detained six fishermen from Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar on Sunday afternoon.

The detainees are Mohammad, 30, son of Abul Hossain of Jaliapara area, Alamgir, son of late Emdad, Abdullah, 25, son of late Kader Hossain, Md Akbar, 30, son of late Kala Mia, Abdul Amin, 32, son of Md Yunus and Syed Ullah.

Locals said BGP members detained the fishermen and seized three of their trawlers when they went fishing in the river.

Trawler owner Jafar Alam claimed: “They fishermen have to give extortion to a Myanmar citizen named Md Nur for fishing in the river. They have been abducted for not paying the extortion.”

He also said ransom have been asked for the abducted fishermen.

Members of BGP detained the fishermen from Sluice Gate area while they were fishing in Naf River around 12:30pm Sunday.

Teknaf BOP outpost Commander Nayek Subedar Md Samsul Alam said: “I have heard the matter. Necessary steps will be taken after talking to the high officials.”

Teknaf BGB 42 Coptain Lieutenant Colonel Abujar Al Jahid said: “The BGP members detained the fishermen as they entered into Myanmar territory while fishing.”

He said: “We have talked to Myanmar Mongdu Camp BGP members regarding the matter. We are trying to bring them back.”
