Bangladesh outshines neighbours in mobile internet use

Update : 05 Oct 2015, 07:54 PM

Bangladesh ranked 149th out of 189 countries in the use of mobile internet, a better position than India and Pakistan – the two big South Asian nations placed at 155th and 156th respectively.

International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UNESCO published the global report titled “The State of Broadband 2015” in September at the United Nations Broadband Commission.

It said the broadband users in Bangladesh is 6.4% of the country’s total internet users, while the rates of India and Pakistan are 5.5% and 5.1% respectively.

In the raking of internet use at home, Bangladesh’s position is 101 among 133 countries. In the fixed broadband list, the country’s position is 132nd where users percentage is 1.2. The rank of India is 131 while Pakistan’s is 135.

Every year, the UN Broadband Commission publishes its annual “State of Broadband” report to take the pulse of the global broadband industry and to explore progress in connecting everyone on the planet via broadband.

This year’s report finds mixed messages about the growth of ICTs and the global state of broadband.

The telecommunication industry continues to grow strongly in terms of penetration and uptake.

The report said mobile broadband would play a complementary role alongside the fixed broadband in some markets, but may increasingly dominate fixed broadband in other markets, although fixed technologies would still play a vital role in providing backhaul networks.

ITU estimates that there will be 794 fixed broadband subscriptions by the end of 2015, representing a solid growth of 6% year-on-year, up from 748m at the end of 2014.
