Annette Dixon, World Bank vice president for the South Asia region, pledged strong support for Bangladesh’s development, the bank says in a statement.
Dixon concluded her second visit to the country yesterday since she took up the role in December last year.
She praised the country’s progress in poverty reduction and economic development.
She said the bank would continue to support Bangladesh in areas necessary to move up within middle income country (MIC) status.
“Bangladesh will need sustained reform efforts for further advancement,” the vice president added.
Dixon said the bank would help the country address its priorities, including creating more and better jobs.
“The World Bank will continue to improve power and transportation, manage urbanization, improve health and education outcomes, and mitigate climate change impacts.”
The World Bank classified Bangladesh as a lower-middle country earlier this year.
Annette Dixon’s visit happened at a time when the bank is preparing its Country Partnership Framework, which will guide its engagement in the country.
The framework is aligned with the government’s 7th five-year plan and follows the same planning cycle.
During her stay in Dhaka, Dixon met senior government officials, including Finance Minister AMA Muhith and Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman.
