The US-based KPC Group would construct a 100-floor convention centre in Purbachal in the outskirts of Dhaka, said Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
Finance minister revealed the plan after a meeting yesterday with a technical delegation of the KPC Group.
It will be the country’s biggest establishment of its kind where the Islamic Development Bank will hold its annual general meeting in 2017.
KPC first proposed Keraniganj of Dhaka as site of the building. Since experts said the site was not suitable for such a high-rise building because of its sandy soil, Purbachal was chosen.
Muhith said public works ministry agreed to give a 40-acre land in Purbachal for the centre.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and Dr Kali Pradip Chaudhuri, a Bangladeshi-origin US businessman and owner of KPC Group, were also present.
Earlier, a Chinese firm proposed to construct the convention centre, but it was later declared ineligible.
According to a meeting source, the KPC placed the proposal of a three-dimensional project which would accommodate a convention, exhibition and a medical university with hospital. KPC sought 100-acre of land for the proposed building.
Finance minister said the construction would begin in next 15-40 days with the test of soil of the site. He added there would be no fund from the government.
KPC Group, which was founded in California in late 1980s by Dr Kali Pradip Chaudhuri, is engaged in numerous businesses around the world.
The group is working in diverse industries including healthcare services and facilities, pharmaceutical and biotechnology, education, real estate, infrastructure development, agriculture, architecture and engineering, alternative energy, waste management, travel services and information technology.
In 2010, Dr Chaudhuri and his group acquired $70m on four hospitals in California, including Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Western Medical Center in Anaheim, Chapman Medical Center and Coastal Communities Hospital in Orange County.
In addition, Dr Chaudhuri successfully acquired two hospitals: Hemet Valley Medical Center and Menifee Valley Medical Center for $172m.
