Law Minister Anisul Huq said the government was making all-out efforts to finalise mediation rules to complement the civil procedure code and recognise ADR institutions.
He said this while speaking at a seminar titled “Alternative Dispute Resolution- The Way Forward.”
Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) organised the seminar at a city hotel yesterday, presided over by its chairman Mahbubur Rahman. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed was present as chief guest.
Anisul Huq said the government instructed inclusion of arbitration clause in every government contract with a value of up to $50m and holding the arbitration in the capital only.
Highlighting the role of an ADR institution in enhancing economic growth through building a business-friendly environment, Mahbubur Rahman said over the last four years BIAC had held numerous training programmes on arbitration and mediation, and also organised different outreach programmes.
Tofail Ahmed said the inclusion of ADR clauses in government contracts was a common practice in developed and developing countries, including Bangladesh.
He suggested adopting the ADR under the BIAC rules in such cases. Former Chief Justice Latifur Rahman in his address emphasised effective steps to boost alternative dispute resolutions and make Bangladesh an investment-friendly country.
