The managing director of Dhaka Wasa yesterday said all slum dwellers in the capital would be provided with the amenity of legal water supply by this December.
Taqsem A Khan was talking to reporters after a total of 304 legal water supply points were installed at Saat Tala slum in the capital’s Mohakhali.
He said there had been tremendous progress in ensuring sufficient water supply for Dhaka residents as per the instruction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Taqsem said: “Now Dhaka Wasa has the capacity for producing surplus water after meeting the daily demand, which is a milestone for the organisation. We have been able to move towards an environment-friendly, sustainable and pro-people water supply system for the betterment of the city dwellers.”
Charlie Hrachya Sargsyan, head of water, sanitation and hygiene of Unicef in Bangladesh, and the Dhaka Wasa managing director jointly handed over the water supply points while officials of both organisations were also present there.
Charlie Hrachya Sargsyan said he was content at the achivement of bringing all Saat Tala slum people under legal water facilities.
Dhaka Wasa was given the Water Leaders Award 2013 at the Global Water Summit held in Spain for its success in providing legal water supply to Dhaka’s low-income communities.
