Flood situation deteriorates further in Gaibandha

Overall flood situation in the district deteriorated further with the sharp rise of the water level in the rivers of Brahmaputra, Ghagot and Karotoa inundating fresh areas.

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water level of the river Brahmaputra increased by 10 cm, the Ghagot by 36 cm and the Karotoa by 3 cm due to heavy downpour and onrush of hilly waters from the upstream in last 24 hours ending at 9am Friday.

The Brahmaputra was flowing 33cm above its danger mark at Fulchharighat point and the Ghagot 36 cm above its danger level at New Bridge Road point of the district town while the Karotoa was flowing 3cm below its danger mark at Katakhali Bridge point of Gobindaganj upazila.

Due to rise of the water level in the rivers, the chars and river basin areas including main land of all the seven upazilas in the district had been submerged and over 1,50,000 people of the upazilas had been marooned, said an official of district administration.

Many of the flood victims had taken shelter on the nearby primary schools and flood control embankment and were passing their days miserably with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds for want of food, drinking water, and fodder.

The standing crops particularly T-Aman paddy, Aman seed bed, summer vegetable and banana on 39,800 hectares of land of the district had been damaged making the growers worried about their food security, said AKM Ruhul Amin, deputy director of DAE.

Primarily, the losses in agri sector caused by flood stood at TK276 crore; he said adding that the amount of losses might be increased as the flood hit the district for the second time which was more severe than the first time flood last month.

The carp species fishes - Rui, Katla, Mrigel, Bata-musa including Monosex tilapia of 7,100 ponds were washed away during the devastating flood and the total loss in fisheries sector was estimated at TK41.35 crore, said Abdul Latif, district fisheries officer.

In reply to a query, the DC said as many as 339 tonnes of rice and cash TK9.90 lakh and 1,101 bundles of corrugated iron sheets were allocated for the flood affected people particularly the poor ones of the district till Thursday.
