Minister: No reshuffle in RAB now

Update : 25 Aug 2015, 08:10 PM

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday said that the government has no plans to reshuffle elite the force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in the face of pressure by different quarters including the ruling party leaders.

“The RAB has been carrying out its duties smoothly to curb crime and corruption in the society. Whenever any RAB personnel is found involved in unauthorised duties, they face legal actions,” the minister told reporters at his secretariat office.

On yesterday’s court order for judicial probe into the killing of Chhatra League’s Hazaribagh unit President Arju Mia in a “gunfight” with RAB, Kamal said: “The investigation will be accomplished according to the court’s directives.”

On August 23, Arju’s brother Masud Rana filed the case against three RAB 2 officials and an informant for kidnapping and killing the Chhatra League leader in a planned way.

The following day, RAB 2 commanding officer Lt Col Masud Rana was withdrawn and attached to the headquarters.

Recently, several other ruling party men were killed in so-called “gunfights” with the law enforcers.

‘Ready to accept Nur’

In response to another question, the minister said that India had not informed the Bangladesh government about the repatriation of Nur Hossain, the prime accused in Narayanganj seven-murder case.

“We are ready to accept Nur Hossain if India repatriates him. So far, India has not provided any information about his repatriation,” he added.

On April 27, Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) panel mayor Nazrul Islam and six others were abducted. Later, their bodies were recovered from the Shitalakkhya River. After the incident, Nur fled to India but was arrested along with two other accomplices in June in Kolkata of West Bengal. He was later sued for illegal entry and possession of illegal arms.

Recently, media reports said that Indian police had pleaded to the court for withdrawing the cases against Nur, which may pave way for his repatriation.
