Flood situation likely to worsen

Flood situation across the country may deteriorate within the next 24 hours as major rivers of the country were showing rising trend as of yesterday. 

“All the major river systems are in rising trend which is likely to continue in next 72 hours,” said a statement of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, adding that rivers were flowing above their danger in 13 points across the country.

The FFWC found water levels in 73 points to have risen out of 85 stations it monitored across Bangladesh in the past one day while the water level receded only in nine points.

The met office, meanwhile, issued a statement predicating “heavy to very heavy falls at places over Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and moderately heavy to heavy falls at places elsewhere over the country”. It feared that as a result of the heavy downfall “the flood situation in some parts of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Feni, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban Districts may deteriorate in next 48 hours”.

Flash flood hits lower parts of Khagrachhari, Feni

Around 100 villages in Khagrachhari have gone under water due to rain and onrush of water from upstream.

Thousands of people in the district are left marooned as well as road communications between the district and other parts of the country remained snapped since yesterday morning.  As a result, thousands families have become homeless and taken shelter on embankment and different cyclone centre. Farmers of the district are passing days with anxiety as vegetables on around 200 acres of land have been submerged by the rainwater. Moreover, fish resources from around 100 ponds have been washed away putting traders in huge losses.

According to Department of Agricultural Extension, standing crops at Kaladeva, Battali, Golabari, Ganjapara, Muslimpara and Mehedibug areas under Sadar upazila while Chhoto Merung, Bachha Merung, Boro Merung, Sobahanpur, Shantipur, Kobakhali of Dighinala upazila, Fatemanagor, Pujgangmukh, Latiban of Panchhari upazila, Tabalchhari, Gumti, Natunpara of Matirnga, Gachhabil, College Para and Tintahori of Manikchhari upazila were damaged by rainwater.

Khagrachhari Municipality Penal Mayor ATM Rashed Uddin said they had opened  five flood centres aiming to serve flood affected people and they would distribute dry foods among them within shortest possible time.

Deputy Director of Khagrachhari District Agriculture Extension Office Jugal Pado Dey said farmers becoming worst victim of flash flood as most of the vegetable gardens were inundated.

Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman said he had asked officials of Department of Agricultural Extension to take measures to asses loss of farmers. The assessment report would be sent to higher authorities so that they could take measures to help farmers of the affected areas.

Meanwhile, vast tracts of farmlands and thousands of dwelling houses have been gone under water in Feni as a dam collapsed at several points.

According to the Water Development Board, water of the Feni River was flowing above 120cm of danger level yesterday afternoon.

The rural flood victims had been suffering from acute food, shelter and drinking water crisis because of the flood, said Harun 0r Rashid Majumdar, chairman of Anandapur union parishad.

Sources at the Water Development Board said many areas of the locality might flooded further due to onrush water from the upstream.
