Update : 16 Aug 2015, 08:11 PM

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque yesterday said that the ruling Awami League is big organisation and there might be some factional clashes.

“Police will follow the legal course if any criminal offences take place,” he told reporters in response to queries after attending a programme at Rajarbagh Police Lines auditorium.

He also claimed that no clashes had taken place centring share of extortion money, collected to observe the National Mourning Day on August 15.

Shahidul, however, admitted that some factional clashes occurred recently in Badda in the capital, Kushtia and elsewhere, “but all the offenders will be brought to the book.”

While addressing the programme, the police chief said that none should have eligibility be the citizen of Bangladesh if they do not accept Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the father of the nation.

“[BNP founder] Ziaur Rahman was an autocrat, marshal law administrator and indifferent over democratic system. He was going to the Chittagong Port to release arms and ammunition of the Pakistani Army when some local Awami League leaders forced him to announce the declaration of independence on radio in favour of Bangladesh,” he said.

Shahidul said when he, the DMP commissioner and the Rapid Action Battalion director general speak the truth, some vested groups brand them as pro-government. “This is unfortunate.”

DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia alleged that the BNP-Jamaat forces were running havoc across the country under the disguise of Hefazat-e-Islam.

Several other police officers also criticised BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for celebrating birthday on August 15.
