Ten days into her birth mother of the bullet-hit baby Nazma Khatun could finally see her daughter.
Though for a brief 20 minutes perhaps it was the best moment in her life.
As soon as she had a glimpse of her injured baby Nazma burst into tears. She, however, was not allowed to take her baby into her lap.
At present Nazma is undergoing treatment in the Ward 212 while Suraiya, her daughter, had been transferred to the Ward 211 for better treatment three days ago.
On-duty doctors said the baby was improving bit by bit but her condition might deteriorate at any time. They, however, said the blood reports showed that Suraiya was improving gradually.
The 10-day-old baby, Suraiya, had little fever and jaundice amid risk of blood infection. Doctors said they were not yet sure of any infection in future.
Dr Kaniz Hasina, Paediatric Department’s associate professor who had been with the baby since she arrived at DMCH, said the baby was improving but it could not be ascertained that she would not be affected by blood infection.
Meanwhile, Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu, visited the baby and her mother around 3pm yesterday and assured of taking stern actions against those involved in the incident.
In the meantime, the two arrestees were granted a three-day remand each by Magura police yesterday afternoon.
The baby was injured when her eight-month pregnant mother was shot in the abdomen during an attack by a Jubo League faction on another faction on July 23 in Magura that left one killed and another person injured.
The bullet went through the unborn baby’s right shoulder and damaged her right eye.
