7 villages inundated as embankment collapses in Hatia

Update : 31 Jul 2015, 12:12 PM

Hundreds of people of seven villages in the district's Hatia upazila are marooned following a partial collapse of an embankment on Friday.

A portion (1.5km) of the embankment collapsed because of the continuous heavy rainfall and rushing water from Bishkhali, Buriswar, Boleswar and Khakdan rivers in the last couple of days.

The cyclonic storm 'Komen' over the northeast bay and the adjoining Bangladesh coast has crossed Chittagong coast near Sandwip on Friday morning and now lies over Noakhali and adjoining area as a land depression.

Under the influence of the cyclone, squally weather has been continuing over the north bay, the adjoining coastal areas and their islands since Wednesday.

Hatia UNO Abu Hasanat Mohammed Moeenuddin told the Dhaka Tribune that some 30 cattle had died due to the cold and rough weather in Biribiri area under the upazila till Friday afternoon.

“Some 1.5km of the embankment has been washed away by the floodwater. As a result seven villages under three unions were inundated and hundreds of people of these areas were marooned.”

Anupam Barua, acting deputy commissioner of Noakhali, said: “The government has allotted 11 metric tons of rice and Tk25,000 for the flood-hit people of Hatia upazila while 10 metric tons of rice and Tk20,000 for the people of Senbag, Sonaimuri, Begumgonj, Companigonj, Kabirhat, Sadar and Subarnachar upazilas each.”

However, no relief package has yet been announced for Chatkhil upazila.

The district administration primarily allotted the relief package in a bid to ease the sufferings of the people in the areas, said Anupam.
