The High Court has ordered the authorities concerned to stop the construction work of car park demolishing wall surrounding Lalbagh Fort within 24 hours.
The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman passed the order following a writ petition filed by Advocate Monzil Morshed.
The court also issued a rule asking why the broken wall of Lalbagh Fort should not be brought back to its previous condition. To construct a parking area, a part of the ancient wall surrounding the Lalbagh Fort is broken, tarnishing the main design of the 400-year-old archaeological site. Director general of archaeology department, curator of Lalbagh Fort, Lalbagh police station OC and cultural secretary have been asked to respond to the rule within two weeks.
Part of Lalbagh Fort surrounding wall has been demolished recently to build a car park at the cost of Tk30 lakh.
The action has drawn protests from a number of quarters including several environmental organisations.
The High Court on October 26, 2011, ordered the authorities concerned to remove illegal structures inside and around the fort.
But the order has been very weakly enforced, and the fort and other historic structures around the city are routinely illegally encroached upon for commercial purposes.
