The nonstop heavy shower triggered by squally wind has mostly submerged in the lower parts in Chittagong city causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers.
Bangladesh Metrological Department, Patenga Office in Chittagong’s meteorologist Tariful Newaj Kabir told Dhaka Tribune that about 147.1 millimeters rainfall was recorded in last 24 hours till 3pm evening on Wednesday while the rainfall would be continued for next few days following temporary gusty.
Following the heavy nonstop shower since Tuesday morning most of the parts including Muradpur, Sholoshahar Gate No: 2, Bahaddarhat, Probortak intersection, Chawakbazar, Sulukbahar, Halishahar area went under knee-water causing water logging problems.
In addition, dilapidated condition of the roads in the different areas caused serious traffic jams along with the water logging during office hour, said the city dwellers.
Commuters, greatly outnumbering the rickshaws, had to suffer through filthy water from overflowing roadside drains to reach their destination. Offices and different educational institutions bound people mostly victims of the problem during the office time.
The loading and uploading of the goods at Chittagong Port jetties were continued like others days, said port sources.
On the other hand, fearing the possible landslide in the hilly area following the heavy downpour, Chittagong District Administration and Chittagong Metropolitan Police asked the people who used to live at the structures in the foothills to vacate the places to fend off any kind of causalities due to landslide.
To alert the hillside dwellers police started to announce through loud speakers to vacate the places in city’s Akbar Shah, Biswacolony, Tigerpass, Lalkhan Bazar, Baizid areas in the morning.
It is mentioned that mainly the lower-income people have used to live at the foothills or slopes of the hills in the city with the fear of possible landslides where a section of influential political leaders and locals have built the such kind of illegal structures pushing the life into the death-risk.
According to the Chittagong DC office, about 666 families have been living at the slopes of 25 hills with much risk.
About 200 people were killed in last eight years by landslides during rainy season, sources said.
