Update : 16 Jun 2015, 08:28 PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina listened to the maiden speech of her niece Tulip Rezwana Siddique at the British parliament yesterday.

Tulip, who was elected a parliament member of the Labour Party from Hampstead and Killburn constituency, participated in the debate on whether the United Kingdom should remain in the European Union.

The Bangladesh premier sat in the gallery of the House of Commons. Her younger sister and Tulip’s mother Sheikh Rehana, son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, his wife and PM’s daughter Saima Hossain were also present. Tulip’s brother Radwan Mujib Siddique and husband Chris Parsey were also there.

Tulip recalled the assassination of Bangabandhu and most of his family members in 1975.

In her nearly 10-minute speech, Tulip highlighted the background of becoming a citizen of Hampstead and Killburn. She thanked the voters of her constituency for electing her.

The Labour Party MP demanded that the door of the UK be kept open for the immigrants.

During her speech, two other Bangladeshi-origin MPs – Rushnara Ali and Dr Rupa Haque – were present at the House of Commons.

Later, the prime minister called on House of Lords Speaker Baroness D’ Souza, said PM’s Media Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury.

Earlier, on her arrival at the British parliament, the Bangladesh premier was received by Chairman of All Party Parliamentary Group on Bangladesh Keith Vaz.
