A Dhaka court has sent Bakhtiar Alam Roni, a lawmaker’s son who has been accused of murdering two people, to jail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur passed the order after DB Sub-Inspector Dipak Kumar Das, the investigation officer of the case, produced Roni before the court on Saturday afternoon.
The court also granted a petition that sought the court's order for admitting Roni in hospital.
The court fixed June 16 for hearing the bail petition filed by Roni's lawyer.
The investigation officer submitted a report with the court in connection with the killing. In his report, the IO mentioned that they have found Roni's direct involvement with the killing of two innocent people.
He also requested the court to send Roni to jail for proper investigation of the case.
According police, the ruling party lawmaker’s son was drunk when he opened fire on his victims on a busy thoroughfare.
Bakhtiar’s chauffeur, Imran Fakir, also arrested in the case, gave a confessional statement before the court saying Bakhtiar was drunk when the shooting took place.
On the night of April 13, the driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw of the daily Janakantha and a rickshaw-puller were shot by an unidentified shooter in the Dilu Road area of Moghbazar.
Rickshaw-puller Abdul Halim died on the spot. Auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Sikder died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
A case filed with Ramna police station by Halim’s mother, Monawara Begum, was later shifted to the Detective Branch.
Investigators said around the time of the shooting there was a traffic jam in the area.
Annoyed by the gridlock, Bakhtiar stepped out of his car and fired four to five bullets, hitting two people. The car then drove off, Investigation Officer Dipak said quoting Imran’s confessional statement.
